Song -- You Gotta Be by Des'ree
While I was driving back from work today, the song "You Gotta Be" by Des'ree came on the radio. This song is significant in my life. When I was in 7th grade, my reading teacher had us do a project that involved us choosing a motivational song to write about (we had to do some sort of assignment with it, but I forget exactly what it was). My teacher used this song as her example, and ever since, I have used this song as a "pump up" song. I listen to it anytime I need encouragement. More specifically, I listened to it on repeat driving to every interview I had when I started looking for a teaching position.
The link above is actually a youtube video, but it has the lyrics that go along with the song. I feel like the lyrics are very motivational. They make me feel better if I am having a bad day or they can give me encouragement for a challenging situation.
My favorite line from this song is when Des'ree sings, "The best part is danger staring you in the face." I like this line because of the way she sings it. She sings it with a cool and confident tone of voice. This makes me see the "danger" as being challenges in life and it's like saying, "Yea, bring it on. I got this." This line makes me feel like I can take on any challenge that is sent my way. It also makes me feel like I can accomplish anything, no matter how hard.
I think it's amazing how one small assignment in middle school can still impact my life today. It's amazing how teachers can influence students in small ways, whether they realize it or not!
Isn't it crazy how inspirational songs can be!?! There is a song that whenever it comes on, it reminds me of wrestling throughout my younger years. Wrestling is my favorite sport, and even though I coach it now, I really miss competing. The song, "Time Of Your Life" by Greenday alway reminds me of how much I enjoyed and how much I miss wrestling. It makes me think of what I could have done with wrestling after high school, in which I regretedly did not persue. But, as the song says, "it's something unpredictable, but in the end is right." I started coaching right out of high school, but still just missed the competition side of it. Everytime I hear that song, I sit back and just think about those days. I look at the possitives though. If I were to go away for college, and continue wrestling, I would not have found my wonderful wife and would not have this wonderful coaching job that I have now, or the coaching experience that I have now, which really helped me get my teaching job.
ReplyDeleteIt's really interesting how sometimes songs can make you remember certain things or feel certain ways. There is a song that was on my volleyball team's warmup CD last season (Club Can't Handle Me by Flo Rida) and every time I heard that song, it makes me think of the season. There are a few songs that remind me of my parents, which makes me miss them (they are getting older and I worry about their health). There are also songs that make me think of bad times. For example, there are a few songs that remind me of my ex boyfriend because they were "our" songs, and I don't like to be reminded of him because it was a bad break up. Then you have those songs that really just motivate you to get up and get going. Music is a wonderful thing! I especially love to play music in my PE classes because it really gets the students excited about participating.
