The Hard Is What Makes It Great

For one of the assignments for the ESU Sports Psychology class, we had to find motivational clips and share them. I had chosen a clip from the movie A League Of Their Own, and ever since, I have had the motivational phrases from it stuck in my head. Therefore, I wanted to share it.

The best part of this clip is the last few lines that Tom Hanks says. He says, "It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard everyone would do it" and "The hard is what makes it great." These two quotes really hit home. Whenever I am having a rough day, these quotes remind me that I need to keep going. For example, if I am having a hard time juggling work, coaching, and personal obligations, I just have to remember that if it wasn't hard, then I wouldn't be the only one doing so many things. I think it also is very motivating because if you honestly think about it, if everything was easy, then everyone might be equal. Hard work is what sets us apart from the person next to us. I feel fortunate that I was offered a teaching position at my school, beating out more than 100 other applicants. However, I feel as though I deserved the position because I worked really hard to get where I was. I put up with a terrible first year job and worked my tail off. And as I look back on it now, it was supposed to be hard! In addition, whenever I have a bad day and I think that things are just "so terrible," I have to remind myself that there are thousands of other people that are dealing with worse struggles than I am.

  1. This is true! If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. This reminds me of when I was student teaching, working, and coaching. I was trying to get through the last semester of school. This semester was rough, but I knew what I wanted to do, so I made it through by working hard and not feeling sorry for myself. After that summer, I got a teaching position and two coaching positions.

  2. I was in the same position after my first year of teaching. I was teaching at a local charter school in State College and the pay was not very good. I was working two other jobs outside of teaching: EMS and coaching. Sometimes, I would go from 7:30am-4pm at the charter school, then go right to a 5pm-7am shift on the ambulance (we could eat/sleep/study/etc as long as the pager didn't go off, but every night is different)...and THEN go right back to school the next day at 7:30am-4pm and sometimes then have to coach the following afternoon for two hours. It was HARD, but i had to do it. Fortunately, my hard work payed off (I coached with the guy I now co-teach with) and I landed my dream job at Park Forest Middle School (my current position).

So yes...the hard is what makes it great...and usually leads to great things!
